New & Notable: Indie Releases For Friday January 26th, 2024
Every Friday we listen to the most impactful drops in the indie and alternative scenes around and share them for our readers. While these aren’t full reviews, they’re meant to encapsulate notable albums in brief for you.
Future Islands – People Who Aren’t There Anymore
Baltimore, Maryland’s Future Islands dropped their brand new album People Who Aren’t There Anymore this Friday. Sam Herrings unmistakable and iconic vocals swept us off of our feet on this one with impressive bass lines, ethereal keyboards and drum machine work throughout. The album is of such a quality that does not waver from beginning to end, carrying on what we’ve come to expect from singles such as Say Goodbye and The Tower.
Cheekface – It’s Sorted
Los Angeles’ indie rock trio Cheekface surprised us all with an early week album drop of It’s Sorted on Monday. The new ten track album features their signature lyricism and incredible instrumental execution in the realm of geek rock. Singles such as Popular 2 and Life in a Bag are infectious in their positivity and delivery.
Goth Babe – Lola
Los Angeles’ Goth Babe shocked us all with the announcement of his very first full length Lola and it’s finally here. The new eleven track album melds dream pop with indietronica in only the ways Griffin Washburn is capable of. This debut effort offers spacey and relaxed sonic delights such as Bioluminescence, pulling from Washburn’s experience with adventures and personal tragedies alike.
The Smile – Wall Of Eyes
Oxford UK’s The Smile made a big splash this Friday with the release of their much anticipated album Wall of Eyes. The trio consists of legendary members of Radiohead Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, with Tom Skinner on drums and more. The new album builds classical tension in songwriting from a more formal approach than seen from Radiohead. The Smile doesn’t feel anything like a side project, but a band in its own right based on both 2022’s A Light for Attracting Attention and the now alluring Wall of Eyes.
Ty Segall – Three Bells
Ty Segall dropped a mind bending psych-rock driven album this Friday with the release of Three Bells. There’s a lot of new music to enjoy at over an hour in length, but the new work is certainly worth more than a listen through for old and new fans alike. Three Bells continues Ty Segall’s storied career in offering striking and exciting listening experiences in the realm of psychedelic garage rock with tracks such as My Best Friend.
