Warsaw After Midnight, A Glimpse Into Warsaw’s Alternative Goth Scene
Warsaw after midnight is one of those rare compilations that pulls together underground talent to really showcase the grit and passion behind a movement driven by art and music. In this case independent label Musica Tennebris have assembled a split of four polish bands, largely influenced by gothic darkwave and punk rock sensibilities to complete this ghoulish fifteen track release.
The compilation opens fittingly with the impassioned death rock quartet Natures Mortes performing Liars Web along with three additional tracks that are all heavily post-punk in instrumentation and execution. Natures Mortes of Poznań have been releasing singles this year with the intention of dropping a debut full length in the near future.
Anarcho death rock ensemble Eat My Teeth are featured in four tracks and offer a raw punk rock approach to their craft, with soaring and precise vocal talent courtesy of Natt, crashing drums, driving bass and infectious guitar work. Natt’s style hearkens back to the legendary anarcho punk outfit Crass often while definitely not shying away from the opportunity for the occasional growl or scream.
Nameless Creations brings a smattering of unapologetically gritty low fidelity art punk to the split. On the track Pain Powered Machine Dorian etches out dark and bluesy lyricism behind an undulating wall of sound throughout. The band last released their full length Plague Party in October of 2023.
Marie Laveau picks up the pace with their own flavor of poignant goth rock, a perfect last act for this experience in the dark arts entirely. In the end Warsaw after midnight is a fantastic compilation offering listeners a look into these talented musicians. Additionally it also offers listeners the opportunity to see how art through music in our own communities can culminate and grow into inspiring cultural movements.
